Specializing in the restoration and repair of Brazilian Rosewood

Gordon Addison Stanley Hand Plane Knob and Tote Rosewood Repair

What do you offer and what is the cost?

Let’s get to the point, restorative work can be tedious and time consuming. Add in the cost of genuine Brazilian rosewood, however small it may be, and you have the beginning of an expensive repair. So, when is a restoration “worth the money”? Most projects fall into one of two main categories; they’re either a treasured family heirloom or they belong on a collectible tool.

Each and every restoration is unique, so pricing is offered on a case-by-case basis and always requires photos. We’ll do our best to keep the price in line, and if your project becomes a feature video on our YouTube channel, you’ll just pay for materials and shipping.

Tote Restoration & Repair

The single most popular repair is a horn replacement. Gravity has a way of snapping the horn off a plane, and being tossed around in grandpa’s toolbox will also prove to be hard on a plane handle. Missing horns are replaced with genuine Brazilian rosewood and examples can be found in the photo gallery.

Mid-body breaks are the second most popular, and if you have a “clean break”, the project can be very affordable. If you have missing pieces, compound fractures, and rounded edges, then it’s fair to say time and money associated with the restoration will both increase.

Knob Restoration & Repair

Damaged knobs can be sorted into two main categories: chunks and splits, or chips and cracks. The foot (base) of a knob is subject to radial cracks due to stress or age. These are usually repaired without removing or adding material. A chip at the foot will always be dressed, new rosewood added, and the original shape brought back to place.

When it comes to major cracks, it’s usually easiest to split the knob into two pieces and then reassemble. By doing this, we can be assured of the best bond, and we can remove the stress that caused it to split in the first place.

Handle Restoration & Repair

Is your Stanley 45 missing a horn? Of course we can fix it! Many Combination planes have integral rosewood handles. Some dry out and split over time, others may suffer and impact, and now need attention. If possible, I leave the rosewood pinned in place when making the necessary repair.  If the handle does need to be removed, it’s a challenge, but it certainly can be done. Check out the photos in our gallery to see a few of the plow planes that have had rosewood repairs performed.
